THE UNDERGROUND | |
crazy jane ⋆cool manic pixie dream girl ⋆powers: longevity Given the unenviable position of being the primary personality in Kay Challis' body, Crazy Jane is stretched a little thin between mediating the rest of the personalities in the Underground and managing the business of daily living. Sarcastic, free-spirited, and longing to live life on her own terms, Jane has a good heart but prefers to keep to herself, in large part to protect other people from her more dangerous personalities.
hammerhead ⋆this one's kind of an asshole ⋆powers: super strength The "enforcer" personality in Jane's mind, Hammerhead is an angry punk rocker with a deep distrust of outsiders and a hatred of men (especially fathers and priests, two figures in Kay's life who abused her). Ultimately a manifestation of anger as a tool for self-protection, she uses her super strength and antagonistic attitude to scare or fight off any threats and keeps dangerous personalities in check in the Underground. Her one goal is to keep "the girl" safe, even if that means sabotaging Jane's plans or friendships. When she's in the driver's seat, a tattoo of a winged skull manifests on Jane's collarbones and she speaks in a growl.
dr. harrison ⋆now my world is small, and i am the monster ⋆powers: hypnosis/persuasion Dr. Harrison is most likely a way to turn Jane's extensive mistreatment in psychiatric care on its head. A cool-voiced woman with blue eyes and a streak of white in her neat hair, Dr. Harrison is an excellent psychoanalyst with the uncanny ability to analyze someone's personality and break it down both gently and devastatingly. She manifested when Jane was locked in Corpus Sanatorium under the treatment of an abusive doctor, nearly talking him into suicide and going on to start a cult whose faith ultimately saved the world from an apocalyptic cult's god. She's the personality who manages to undermine the nebulous villain Mr. Nobody most deeply, profiling and humanizing him. This removes the fear he inspired and replaces it with pity, a devastating blow.
baby doll ⋆cyborg's biggest fan ⋆powers: unknown A little girl with the fears and interests to match, Baby Doll is one of the sweetest of Jane's personalities. She is a manifestation of childhood and a reminder of what untainted innocence is like, allowing Kay's mind to feel like a child without the associated trauma. Baby Doll has pigtails and a high-pitched voice and wants nothing more than to play and make friends. She can be easily upset, scared, or charmed as any child can: she giggles while watching cat videos, cries when the people she cares about are absent, and is scared of strange-looking beings.
karen ⋆basic blonde barbie bitch/the worst of the 64 ⋆powers: affection manipulation Karen is the part of Jane's mind that just wants to be a normal young woman living life normally. Because Kay and Jane have never experienced normal relationships, Karen's idea of "normal" is greatly influenced by 90s romantic comedies, to the great chagrin of everyone who's ever had to deal with her. Bubbly, blonde, and boy-crazy, Karen has her eyes set on a random guy named Doug and keeps ruining his life as she makes him fall in love with her and tries to be with him forever. The other personalities in Jane's head are dead-set against this, and when she's not using her love charms to get people to adore her, everyone hates her and thinks she's a psycho. Hammerhead especially despises her and fights tooth and nail to keep her in check.
![]() | flit ⋆flit says fuck you in the face ⋆powers: teleportation Flit sticks around so rarely that none of her traits manifest in Jane's appearance. Always bringing a positive attitude, she's a free spirit, going where she pleases and not explaining her reasoning to anyone although she'll remove Jane from danger and is sometimes willing to teleport Jane's friends where they need to go. In the Underground she appears as a brown-haired young woman dressed in 80s style workout clothes. She likely represents the longing to escape or travel that Jane felt while confined, which explains her mercurial attitude as well. |
sylvia ⋆creepy voice, kind of moody ⋆powers: unknown In contrast to Flit, Sylvia is probably the manifestation of Jane's misery at being held and isolated in a mental institution. Her name is likely inspired by Sylvia Plath, and she does seem nightmarish enough to tie into that author's mental anguish: while we've never seen her hurt anyone, she has a deep, scratchy, reverberating voice like a demon might have.
silver tongue ⋆auf wiedersehen motherfucker ⋆powers: cutting words Silver Tongue is a woman with braided hair and silver pigment on her lips and chin. She has the unusual ability to speak words, form them into floating metal, and direct them as weapons to stab or slice at her foes. You almost need to see it to understand it. One of Jane's more combat-ready personalities, she rarely manifests unless she feels her presence in a fight would be helpful. Presumably she might be a result of Kay feeling as if her words were unheeded and held no weight, making this concept both literal and deadly.
lucy fugue ⋆maybe she can get us all on the same wavelength she's been talking about ⋆powers: electrokinesis Lucy Fugue has electrical powers, and seems to live according to the flow and ebb of natural elements like lightning. She's willing to show up during a conflict to fight (if someone else has asked for it), but seeks balance and equilibrium, urging Jane to focus on these ideals. Lucy Fugue's skin crackles with blue electricity and speaks as if her voice is being read through an electronic modulator.
penny farthing ⋆that's my job. i run. ⋆powers: unknown A personality who seems to have walked straight out of a Charles Dickens novel, Penny Farthing is a timid girl with an English accent and the old-timey slang vocabulary to match. She speaks with a stutter born of her general anxiety when she manifests on the surface, which she loses when at home in the Underground. Penny is docile and avoids conflict whenever possible, even when facing it is the better option. She's sweet and has a strong sense of self-preservation, but rarely manifests on the surface as she's not the most "useful" personality – she mostly shows up to ensure a dangerous one can't take the wheel.
![]() | katy ⋆she doesn't like to be interrogated ⋆powers: pyrokinesis, flight Katy is an example of a personality who is antisocial out of pure necessity – it seems she's dangerous even in the Underground and the others avoid her. When she's manifested on the surface she's immediately hostile. Her body is entirely engulfed in flames, which she can use as weapons or as a force to propel herself while flying. She, like Hammerhead, may be a manifestation of explosive anger. |
![]() | sun daddy ⋆we're not doing that! ⋆powers: pyrokinesis, growth Sun Daddy has similar powers to Katy, minus the flight, but remains a very different figure. Sun Daddy has a flaming sphere for a head, and when she appears she grows to a giant size (at least twelve feet tall). Capable of absorbing attacks, she appears to be more of a defensive problem-solver personality, showing up to protect from threats or in anticipation of a large conflict. She also appears to have an interest in neutralizing future threats, shown when she destroyed Von Fuches' "enhancement chamber." |
![]() | the hangman's daughter ⋆i don't even know what to hope for ⋆powers: precognition A poetically depressed young woman, the Hangman's Beautiful Daughter is a gifted artist with the ability to predict the future with in paintings. Although this is literally an art and not an exact science, Jane insists "the Hangman's Daughter never lies." She is willing to come forward in order to create art for others, including once mapping the Underground for Niles Caulder. |
![]() | scarlet harlot ⋆please touch me ⋆powers: unknown All we know of the Scarlet Harlot so far is that she is a sexually open and eager young woman, likely a safer outlet for Kay to experience her sexual feelings without letting them affect every area of her life. This personality is not seen very frequently as Jane has many hang-ups regarding sex. |
![]() | driver 8 ⋆all i know is this train ⋆powers: unknown A personality that resides only in the Underground, Driver 8 is a crucial component of that system. The Underground as a construct resembles the tunnels and stations of a subway system, with each personality having their own "station" and Driver 8 running the train that brings personalities to the "surface". She prides herself in her work but is willing to give the personalities some leeway, as shown when she allows Jane to pull the emergency brake on the train, ensuring she doesn't have to surface immediately when she's overwhelmed. |
![]() | the secretary ⋆each of us has a purpose. a reason for being ⋆powers: unknown We have not seen the Secretary surface, but in the Underground we know she is a diplomatic and pragmatic personality. When Jane becomes overwhelmed by her life and chooses to remain in the Underground rather than face it, the Secretary attempts to talk her into retaking her place at the helm for everyone's safety. |
![]() | pretty polly ⋆polly, pretty polly, come and go with me ⋆powers: unknown A redheaded young woman dressed in Victorian mourning garb with X-shaped scars slashed over her eyes, Polly has never been on the surface. She and Karen have a personally antagonistic relationship, shown when Karen mockingly sings the folk song "Pretty Polly," from which she is apparently inspired, and Polly slaps her. The song is about a young woman named Polly who is murdered by her lover. In some versions of the song, Polly returns as a ghost to kill her murderer. Pretty Polly appears to be a similarly vengeful, if impotent, figure in the Underground. |
![]() | the sisters ⋆we are all sisters here ⋆powers: unknown The Sisters are a three-headed personality residing in the Underground. Her (their?) station is a fortune-telling parlor where they read Tarot cards for Jane, urging her to venture to a deadly part of the Underground called the Well, where the worst of her trauma is contained. The Well had destroyed an overwhelmed primary before, although Jane manages to escape unscathed through the help of a friend. The Sisters might be read as malicious, but it's possible that they're simply an embodiment of how foreboding and scary facing our own deepest issues can be. |
![]() | black annis ⋆who comes this way? ⋆powers: unknown Based on the English folklore monster of the same name, Black Annis is a terrifying hag with blue skin and fingers of long bladed iron. She is the guardian of the Well in the Underground, and will attack any man who manages to make it that far. |
![]() | kit w'the canstick ⋆powers: unknown Appears in the Underground as a woman in 17th century dress and carrying an unlit candle. |
![]() | driller bill ⋆driller bill, asshole! ⋆powers: unknown Driller Bill appears alongside Hammerhead to apprehend Cliff Steele when he travels to the Underground. She appears as a middle-aged woman wearing a boiler suit and a beanie. |
![]() | jill-in-irons ⋆powers: unknown Jill-in-Irons appears in the Underground as a large muscular woman wrapped in chains. She is possibly based on the folkloric giant Jack-in-Irons. |
![]() | jack straw ⋆powers: unknown Jack Straw is a scarecrow seen "jailed" in the Underground. According to Karen, she is harmless. |
![]() | the nun ⋆powers: unknown Appears in the Underworld as a nun in a habit, carrying a chainsaw. |
![]() | mama pentecost ⋆powers: unknown Appears in the Underground as an older woman dressed in a kimono. |
![]() | miranda ⋆shut the door. shut the door. shut the door ⋆deceased Miranda was Kay Challis' first alternate personality and remained her primary through childhood until she was a teenager, when she was sexually assaulted by a priest in church. Miranda found herself depressed and unable to handle the trauma anymore, eventually destroying herself by entering the Well. While she can be observed via memories, all that remains of her in the Underground is her station, which is now dark and filled with corpses. After her destruction, Jane took her position as the primary personality. |
![]() | kay olivia challis ⋆i don't want to be kay anymore ⋆powers: shape-shifting? Kay Challis was a normal 7-year-old girl from Arkansas when her father sexually assaulted her. Drawing into herself to escape the trauma, she created other personalities to "take over" her life and protect her from the abuse. The first of these was Miranda. As every other personality considers protecting Kay their top priority, she remains an innocent little girl and will not surface unless she's drawn out through another person's control. Every personality in Kay's head puts her protection as their highest priority, keeping her so safely hidden that not even Jane's friends fully understand that she, not Jane, is the original personality. |
